The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, has clarified that no decision has been taken to replace the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) khaki uniform with Adire or any other fabric, contrary to media reports following his appearance on Channels Television.
In a statement issued after the programme, the minister explained that his reference to Adire and Ankara during the interview was merely to highlight some of the proposals being considered as part of the ongoing NYSC reform process and not an announcement of an approved replacement for the current uniform.
According to him, the Federal Government is evaluating various options that meet key requirements, including a professional outlook, a unique national identity, durability, functionality, cost-effectiveness, and the promotion of national pride.
He stressed that no final decision has been made on the fabric or design of the NYSC uniform, adding that any eventual choice would be based on extensive stakeholder consultations and what best serves the interests of the Scheme and the nation.
Olawande urged Nigerians to focus on the broader objectives of the ongoing NYSC reforms, noting that the initiative is aimed at improving employability, promoting entrepreneurship, strengthening national integration, enhancing service delivery, and easing the transition of graduates from education into productive careers.
He added that while public discussions about the proposed uniform are understandable, they should not overshadow the wider reforms designed to empower Nigerian youths and reposition the NYSC as a stronger platform for national development.
The minister also appreciated the feedback from Nigerians, assuring them that all proposals under the reform agenda would be carefully considered in the nation’s best interest.
