The President of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) of Osun State University (UNIOSUN) has alleged that newly recruited Nigerian Army personnel assaulted students, seized mobile phones and sexually harassed female students during the incident in Osogbo.
The SUG President said he received distress calls from students at the university’s Main Campus in Okebale, Osogbo, reporting that the recruits were attacking students in the area.
According to him, he was able to identify the attackers as Nigerian Army recruits after reviewing a video recorded by one of the students, which showed a student holding a cap allegedly belonging to one of the soldiers.
“I was able to identify them as soldiers through a recorded video showing a student holding the cap of one of the army personnel,” he said.
He stated that the Students’ Union immediately intervened by taking some of the injured victims to the hospital for treatment. He added that the union also created a Google Form to enable affected students report their experiences and receive the necessary support.
The SUG President further disclosed that the university management provided assistance to victims of the incident and suspended academic activities at the Osogbo campus on the day of the alleged invasion.
He urged students to remain security-conscious and avoid confronting violent situations on their own.
“If there is any cause for alarm, students should immediately raise it instead of believing they can confront such situations because of their numbers,” he said.
The students’ leader also appealed to the Nigerian Army authorities to ensure discipline among their personnel and take necessary measures to prevent a recurrence of the incident.
He called on the military to maintain peace, professionalism and respect for the boundaries between security personnel and members of the university community.
