The Federal Government has confirmed that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) will replace its long-standing khaki uniform with Adire fabric as part of ongoing reforms aimed at promoting local production and strengthening Nigeria’s textile industry.
The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, disclosed this on Thursday while speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, explaining that the decision is intended to ensure government spending supports local manufacturers instead of foreign industries.
“It’s Adire. Adire is being produced in Nigeria. We have them in Ogun, we have them in Kwara, we have a textile industry. Let’s put our money back into the country,” the minister said.
Beyond the uniform change, Olawande revealed that the Federal Government is also restructuring the NYSC posting process to align corps members with their professional qualifications.
According to him, graduates with education-related degrees will now be posted to schools, replacing the current practice where corps members are often deployed without consideration for their areas of specialization.
The minister said the reforms are designed to make the NYSC scheme more impactful, improve service delivery, and better utilise the skills of Nigerian graduates while supporting indigenous industries.
The announcement marks one of the most significant changes to the NYSC scheme in recent years, with further details on the implementation expected from the scheme’s management.
