Students of Osun State University, Ifetedo Campus, have taken to social media to demand an overhaul of the campus healthcare system following the death of Miss Grace Osunlakin, a final-year student of the institution, Olofofo Uniosun reports.
The students, who expressed grief and anger over the incident, alleged that the University Health Centre lacked the capacity, personnel and resources to respond to medical emergencies, with many calling on the university management and the Osun State Government to take immediate action.
Their outcry was echoed by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D. The Zonal Coordinator, Comrade Adeyemo Josiah Kayode, popularly known as Billioncodes, said that allegations surrounding the emergency medical response, the availability of healthcare personnel and the operational status of the campus clinic must be urgently examined.
The Students’ Union of Osun State University (OSUSU) also demanded a thorough investigation into the incident, with its President, Oremokun Shedrack Imoleayo, describing Grace’s death as a painful and devastating loss that raised serious concerns among students, parents and other stakeholders.
The Osun State University Alumni Association equally reacted, expressing deep sorrow over the death of Grace and extending condolences to her family and the entire university community. In a press release obtained by Olofofo Uniosun and signed by its Public Relations Officer, Oluwasegun Faleyimu, the association called for a thorough, transparent, impartial and time-bound investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death, particularly concerns raised about healthcare services at the Ifetedo Campus Health Centre. It also urged university management to engage stakeholders and review healthcare and student welfare systems to prevent similar incidents in the future.
However, in a statement also obtained by Olofofo Uniosun, the university management debunked claims that poor healthcare facilities were responsible for Osunlakin’s death, stressing that she was never brought to the University Health Centre on the night of the incident. Despite this, management acknowledged the concerns raised and announced that a comprehensive review of healthcare facilities, medical personnel and water supply systems across its campuses had commenced.
The Osun State Governor also reacted to the incident, extending condolences to the family of the deceased and assuring the public that the welfare of students remained a priority, with steps being taken to address identified gaps in campus infrastructure and healthcare delivery.
Students, however, maintained that Grace’s death had exposed longstanding neglect of the Ifetedo Campus and called on both the university and the state government to take concrete action.
