The management of Osun State University has expressed deep regret over the death of its student, Miss Grace Osunlakin, breaking its silence on the incident that shook the Ifetedo Campus.

In a statement obtained by Olofofo Uniosun, the university reads:

REJOINDER TO THE STATEMENT OF Akinteye Babtee Babatunde ON THE DEMISE OF MISS GRACE OSUNLAKIN

The Management of Osun State University (UNIOSUN) has noted the statement credited to the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, concerning the unfortunate demise of Miss Grace Osunlakin, a 400-level student of the University’s College of Law, Ifetedo Campus.

At the outset, the University extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, colleagues, friends, and the entire University community over this painful loss. The passing of any student is deeply distressing, and Management shares in the grief of all affected by this tragic incident.

In the interest of clarity and proper understanding, it is important to address certain issues raised in the statement.

Osun State University operates a multi-campus and collegiate system, with each College equipped with a functional health centre to cater to the medical needs of students and staff. It is therefore necessary to clarify that the University has established healthcare structures across its campuses as part of its commitment to students’ welfare.

The incident involving Miss Grace Osunlakin occurred late at night under circumstances that are currently being reviewed by the University Management. Given the sensitive nature of the matter, it is important to allow the ongoing process of fact-finding to be concluded before drawing conclusions or assigning responsibility.

Management deeply regrets the incident and recognises the concerns it has generated among students, parents, and other stakeholders. In response, the University has commenced a comprehensive review to establish the sequence of events and ascertain whether there were any lapses in procedure or service delivery. This informed the temporary closure of the College of Law, Ifetedo Campus, to ensure calm and enable a thorough assessment of the situation.

The University wishes to assure the public that where any act of omission, negligence, or failure to adhere to established protocols is established, appropriate measures will be taken in line with the University’s regulations and applicable laws.

While Management acknowledges the concerns and emotions surrounding this unfortunate development, it appeals to student leaders, stakeholders, and members of the public to avoid speculation or dissemination of unverified information that may heighten tensions or undermine the ongoing review process.

Osun State University remains committed to the safety, welfare, and wellbeing of its students across all campuses and will continue to strengthen its support systems, including healthcare services, in line with best practices.

Management appeals for calm and understanding as the University continues its review of the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate incident, in the interest of fairness, accountability, and justice.

May the soul of Miss Grace Osunlakin rest in peace.
