UNIOSUN Students Cautioned Amid Security Tension in Town

Students of Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Ikire Campus, have been advised to limit unnecessary movement following rising security tension in some parts of Ikire town.Student Union executives reportedly visited hostels across the campus on May 9, 2026, to sensitise students about the ongoing unrest affecting areas including Obada, Naira and Kobo, and Gantry.According to information gathered, the crisis began on the night of , May 8, and allegedly involved violent clashes between rival groups.

The incident was said to have claimed a life around the Gantry area, while another killing was reportedly recorded earlier on Friday as the tension persisted.In response to the situation, students of the institution have been strongly advised to remain indoors from 9:00 p.m. daily until normalcy returns. Hostel residents were also warned to strictly comply with hostel regulations and avoid unnecessary night movement.

Reacting to the development, the Dean of the Faculty of Culture, Professor Felix ‘Sanjo’ Olatunji, issued a security advisory urging students and residents to remain cautious amid what he described as political turbulence and security risks within Ikire township.“It has come to my notice of political turbulence and security risks which had led to the murder of an individual in Ikire,” the Dean stated.

He further appealed to students to avoid careless conversations, political agitations, and associations capable of endangering lives, especially ahead of the forthcoming gubernatorial election.“Security task should be everybody’s business,” he added, while urging students to avoid unnecessary evening movement and any gathering that could threaten peace and safety.University authorities and student leaders have continued to encourage students to remain vigilant and prioritise their safety while monitoring developments within the community.
