The Department of English (NASELS) booked a place in the next round of the College of Humanities and Culture Provost Cup after defeating the Department of Linguistics 4-3 on penalties following a goalless draw in regulation time.
The knockout fixture, played at the University School Field, ended without a goal after 90 minutes despite both sides creating scoring opportunities.
Linguistics twice found the back of the net during the encounter, but both goals were ruled out for offside, denying the department victory in regulation time.
The match proceeded to a penalty shootout, where NASELS held their nerve to convert four spot kicks, while Linguistics managed three, handing the English Department a 4-3 victory.
The result sends the Department of English into the next stage of the ongoing Provost Cup, an inter-departmental football competition organised by the College of Humanities and Culture to promote sportsmanship, teamwork and healthy rivalry among students.
