Osun State University, UNIOSUN, has emerged as the second-highest-scoring Nigerian university for Research Environment in the 2027 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, putting the institution ahead of several of the country’s older and better-known universities in the category.
UNIOSUN recorded a Research Environment score of 25.6, coming second only to Covenant University’s 32.5 among the 29 Nigerian universities featured in the ranking. (Times Higher Education (THE))
The performance places UNIOSUN ahead of the University of Lagos (20.8), University of Ibadan (19.9), Landmark University (18.0), Obafemi Awolowo University (15.7), Federal University of Technology Akure (14.8) and the University of Ilorin (14.5), among others. (Times Higher Education (THE))

UNIOSUN ahead of some of Nigeria’s biggest names
The result is particularly notable because UNIOSUN’s 25.6 score is considerably higher than the scores recorded by some of the country’s most established universities in the same category.
The University of Ibadan scored 19.9, while the University of Lagos recorded 20.8. Obafemi Awolowo University scored 15.7, and the University of Ilorin recorded 14.5. (Times Higher Education (THE))
UNIOSUN’s score was therefore not simply enough to place it inside the top five; it put the university second nationally on this particular ranking pillar.
What does “Research Environment” mean?
The Research Environment pillar is one of the major components used by Times Higher Education in assessing universities.
It is not simply a measurement of how many buildings or laboratories a university has.
THE’s methodology considers factors connected with the research environment and research strength of an institution, as part of its broader assessment of universities. The 2027 World University Rankings use five broad areas: Teaching, Research Environment, Research Quality, Industry and International Outlook. (Times Higher Education (THE))
This distinction is important because UNIOSUN’s 25.6 is specifically its score for the Research Environment pillar, not its overall university score.
South-West universities dominate the list
The regional picture is also striking.
Of the 15 universities with the highest Research Environment scores in Nigeria, nine are from the South-West geopolitical zone.
They are Covenant University, Osun State University, University of Lagos, University of Ibadan, Landmark University, Obafemi Awolowo University, Federal University of Technology Akure, Lagos State University and Ladoke Akintola University of Technology.
Kwara State University also appears in the top 15, but Kwara is classified within Nigeria’s North Central geopolitical zone.
The concentration gives the South-West a strong presence in the Research Environment category of the 2027 ranking. (Times Higher Education (THE))
Another strong point for UNIOSUN
The Research Environment result comes shortly after UNIOSUN’s historic debut in the overall Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027.
UNIOSUN entered the global ranking in the 1,201–1,400 band, alongside Babcock University and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and emerged as Nigeria’s highest-ranked state-owned university in the overall ranking. (Osun State University)
Its overall score was placed in the 30.5–33.2 range, while it recorded 23.6 in Teaching, 25.6 in Research Environment, 43.8 in Research Quality, 17.6 in Industry and 40.3 in International Outlook. (Osun State University)
The Research Environment score therefore stands out as one of UNIOSUN’s strongest performances in the 2027 assessment.
The bigger picture
UNIOSUN may have only made its first appearance in the Times Higher Education global rankings this year, but its performance in the Research Environment category shows why the overall debut has attracted attention.
With a score of 25.6, the university sits immediately behind Covenant University and ahead of institutions such as UI, UNILAG and OAU in this particular measure.
For UNIOSUN, the message from the ranking is clear: its strongest points in the 2027 assessment are not limited to its overall global ranking position — its research environment is already one of the strongest among Nigerian universities.
