Tension as Army allegedly invade UNIOSUN hostels, assault students

Soldiers from the Army Depot, Osogbo, allegedly invaded student halls of residence at Osun State University on Monday evening, assaulting residents and seizing over 60 mobile phones and other gadgets, according to a Punch report.

Some female students were reportedly stripped naked and forced to dance unclad by the soldiers, who were said to be part of a batch that passed out the previous Saturday. An alleged rape was also reported, though Punch noted this could not be immediately verified as no victim had been identified by the time of filing. Male students and other residents seen wearing army-coloured clothing or caps were also allegedly beaten.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Clement Adebooye visited the affected hostels on Tuesday and said the matter had been reported to the Army Depot’s management, expressing dismay that a facility expected to provide security cover for the campus had instead produced personnel responsible for the attack.

University spokesperson; Ademola Adesoji told Punch that over 20 victims had so far been identified, two students were hospitalised (one since discharged), and three suspected perpetrators had been identified and brought to campus. He said the rape allegation could not yet be confirmed, and that the VC had taken the matter up with army authorities. Punch indicated further details would follow.
