Familiarise yourself with history, Olofofo Uniosun replies OSUSU

The management of Olofofo Uniosun has urged the executive members of Osun State University Students Union Government to familiarise themselves with some of the past events of the media platform.

Recall that the students’ union earlier issued a statement titled “DISCLAIMER OF BROADCAST BY OLOFOFO UNIOSUN”, condemning Olofofo Uniosun’s report, which had been greeted with several reactions.

The President of the Union, Adigun Amidat Ayomide, dissociated the body from the report and the credibility of the claim about the students’ welfare in Ifetedo campus.

She said, “OSUSU as a body dissociates itself from any broadcast emanating from the media on UNIOSUN matters as we were neither consulted nor informed of the issues raised.”

But the SUG President attested, in the disclaimer, that the SUG and the school management would look into the issues raised in the report, saying “…the university management and the student union body are on the pressing matters of the college concerned and can be rest assured that all issues are being attended to….”

Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer of Olofofo Uniosun, in a reaction to the disclaimer on Wednesday, advised the student executives not to misrepresent the facts or reality stated in the report.

In a statement, he said the SUG could not dissociate itself from the media outlet “which has never been associated with them unless the SUG only intends to over-glorify itself.”

He added that the student union did not have the power to determine the legality of the platform in the university like it did on other associations across the institution.

The statement read in part, “Established in 2017, Olofofo Uniosun, has been existing as an independent platform and it is advisable they (OSUSU executives) familiarise themselves with our history because 7 years is indeed a long time; they should engage with history.

“Our belief is that the students union has no jurisdiction to determine the legality of our media outlet in the university since this is a media platform and not an association as earlier claimed.

“We also acknowledge that the last paragraph of their broadcast “…the university management and the student union body are on the pressing matters of the college concerned…”, confirmed the authenticity of our report about the current situation in Ifetedo Campus.”

“The media management, however advised the SUG to channel their energy to getting the issues resolved rather than picking grudges with Olofofo Uniosun as the brand ultimately believe doing such will be translated to a waste of energy and time because the media is only committed to delivering a quality and professional campus journalism.

“We reserve the right to get the opinions of the people who are directly impacted by the ugly situation hence the comments of the College president who is authorised to engage us on behalf of the students, on the issues.

“Also, the students union should remember that their constitutional duty is to represent the interests of various students in each of the six campuses because that is the basis in which the students entrusted their votes in them.

“The SUG shouldn’t be too bothered about our registration status but rather focus on delivering good governance for the interests of the students as it is our pride to ensure that they also enjoy the true dividends of campus journalism.

“Our registration status can neither change our targeted audience nor the qualities of our reports. We believe only the name could change, our audience can never change.

“Kindly play your role as the SUG and Olofofo Uniosun will play its own as a media platform.”

Olofofo Uniosun had earlier reported that the students Ifetedo Campus in Osun State University, were lamenting over the lack of electricity and water supply in their various hostels.

They had told Olofofo Uniosun that students residing at Olubosin Hostel, New Girls Hostel, and Ali Balogun Hostel, were affected by the poor conditions, complaining that the situation had deprived them of good water supply, regular and dependable electricity for their basic academic needs.
